I grew up in the Cascade Mountains in Oregon, obviously I never experienced a hurricane as a child. Since moving to Texas just over 3 years ago I've seen family and friends affected by Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Gustav. Looks like it's my turn... Ike is comin'
The weird part is that I don't even live on the coast. The closest beach is probably 3 1/2 hours away but they're projecting that we're going to experience some intense wind, rain, and flooding. The part that concerns me most is the possible tornadoes. Somehow my husband and I managed to build our house in a tornado path. Yay! For those of you that grew up in the south and mid-west a tornado may not concern you, much like an earthquake seems norm to me, but I am terrified of the idea.
So pray for my family, please: my immediate family, locked in our 1-story, 3-bedroom brick house with 60-75 mph winds outside, and my in-laws who are scattered around east and south Texas much closer to the coast.
Update: Whew, that was quick. The storm turned so now winds will only be 25-35 mph, gusts up to 50 -All good news. Unfortunately the srorm is no weaker, it's just not coming to Austin. But lots of people are... I would hate to have to evacuate to a shelter. To leave everything behind and not know if it will be there when you get back. I can't imagine.
